VERDN Partnership
Since March 2021 we have committed to plant at least one mangrove tree or recover plastic from the ocean for every item purchased. We are achieving this by partnering with VERDN, The EDEN Reforestation Project and Empower AS.
Where It Takes place
In partnership with Verdn, The Eden reforestation project and Empower AS, we plant mangrove trees on your behalf in either Madagascar, Mozambique, or Kenya. We also remove ocean-bound plastic in either Africa or Southeast Asia.
Providing Local Jobs
Tree planting and plastic collection gives crucial income to local villagers so they can provide for their families living in disadvantaged communities.
Why Are We Planting Mangrove Trees?
Mangrove forests are essential ecosystems whose dense roots serve as an anchor for the soil and coastline, preventing erosion and creating a barrier between harsh ocean systems and land. They store four times as much carbon as even tropical rainforest, making them an important tool to mitigate climate change.
Good For Our Planet
A single mangrove tree can remove over 300 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere, assuming it grows for 25 years. That is roughly 12 kg of CO2 per year.
8 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans each year. By collecting this plastic before it pollutes our sea, it can instead be recycled, up-cycled or used for energy.
Additional Impact Effects
In addition to mitigating climate change, forests also have other crucial functions for Earth’s biosphere. They are habitats for a vast majority of Earth’s species of plants and animals. Forests also have huge roles in water provision, soil protection and climate regulation.
